What are xm-files?

Simply put: XM-files are pieces of music that you can play on your computer. They consist of different tracks in which the data for the notes (pitch, duration, volume, vibrato, a.o.) is kept. They are similar to MIDI-files, but with the major difference, that XM-files use digitized samples and MIDI-files don't. This means, that in an XM-file, you can use a recorded voice as an instrument and in a MIDI-file you can't. In a MIDI-file you're also stuck with 128 different, pre-set intruments; in an XM-file you can use up to 256 different, customizable instruments. For those who know what MOD-files are: XM-files have 32 different tracks, MOD-files only have 4.

FastTracker 2.08; a very advanced (but complicated) program for Windows 95 and MS-DOS, which allowes not only the playing of XM-files, but the creation of them as well. If you would like to have it, you can download it here:

My own XM-files

I like to spend my free time on the playing and making of music. So a while ago I started making my own XM-files, which I based (and still base) on real songs by my favorite bands, like Green Day and Bad Religion (Tragically Hip and Bettie Serveert songs are at the moment a bit too hard for me, although I'm trying 'She didn't know' by The Hip!).
